What is Teeth Bonding?

Sometimes called direct composite veneers, most people just refer to them as “bonding.” A dentist places materials in or on the teeth where needed using tooth-colored composites (white or natural-looking materials) used to fill cavities, repair chips or cracks, close gaps between your teeth and build up the worn-down edges of teeth.

The direct composite bonding procedure usually is completed in one dental visit. More complicated or extensive treatments may require additional visits. However, there is usually no need for temporaries or waiting days or weeks for laboratory restorations.

How Is It Done?

Once your dentist has chosen the color that will match the color of the tooth most closely, they slightly abrade or etch the surface of the tooth to roughen it. To help the bonding material adhere, your tooth will be coated with a conditioning liquid.

Your dentist will apply the tooth-colored resin which is molded and smoothed until it’s the proper shape. The material is then hardened with an ultraviolet light or laser. After hardening, your dentist will further trim and shape it. Then the material is polished until it matches the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface.

It usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete the procedure. If you’re having more than one tooth done, you may need to schedule several visits.

Tea, coffee, cigarette smoke and other substances can stain the resin. To prevent or minimize stains, it’s essential to avoid eating or drinking foods that can stain for the first 48 hours after any composite procedure. In addition, brush your teeth often and have them cleaned regularly by a dental hygienist.

When is Teeth Bonding Used?

People turn to dental bonding for a variety of reasons. A few of the most common reasons include:

• To fill in a small gap between two teeth
• To repair decayed teeth by filling a cavity with tooth-colored resin
• To change the shape of a tooth
• To repair chips or cracks in teeth
• To cover up discoloration
• To protect the root of a tooth after it’s been exposed by receding gums
• To make a tooth look larger than it is, which is usually done to make it match the other teeth

Is Dental Bonding Right For Me?

During your consultation, your dentist will discuss the clinical and cosmetic problems that composite teeth bonding can resolve. However, if you have teeth that are extensively damaged or your dentist feels other dental issues may affect the success and longevity of bonding treatment, other options may be presented to you, such as crowns or veneers.

If whitening is needed, pre-treatment teeth whitening may be suggested in order to better match the color of the composite restoration to your natural teeth. Your dentist may wait anywhere from 14 to 21 days before placing your direct composite restorations to ensure a proper and durable bond to your natural tooth structure.

Are There Risks?

The composite resin used in teeth bonding isn’t nearly as strong as a natural tooth. Bonding usually lasts several years before it needs to be repaired. How long it actually lasts depends on how much bonding was done and your oral habits. For example, chewing on pens or biting your fingernails can chip the material.

This is why you will want a complete evaluation by the dentist to be sure teeth bonding the best option for you.
