Dental Emergency Services

“I needed dental emergency services when at age nine an unfortunate accident involving a BB gun and my front tooth scared the heck out of me. But I still remember how great I felt after seeing my dentist. Not only did he take away the pain, he also gave me back a tooth!”
~Dr. Tristan Taylor

Dental emergency services aren’t just for hockey players. They come in all forms and are important part of any community dental services.

Knowing what it is like to have a dental emergency, we make ourselves available to you for around the clock help. That’s why we have a special emergency hotline to give you service when you need it.

If you call our office after normal hours for dental emergency services you will get a recorded message with instructions to call Dr. Taylor’s personal cell phone. He will be able to make arrangements to get you the care you need at the office.

Who Needs Dental Emergency Services?

A person with dental emergency is defined as someone:

  • Who is in severe pain
  • Who has a severe infection
  • Who experiences severe trauma

Everyone has different pain tolerances. But pain is the bodies way to let us know when we need to address an issue. Most dental emergency services address the pain first, sometimes using a temporary fix until further treatment can be provided.

With our Digital Dental Radiography (Digital X-Rays), we can quickly diagnose the problem ad offer the best solutions.

Some of the most common dental emergency services include:

Toothaches – A toothache can be way more painful and debilitating than other body pains and can be caused by a variety of reasons. Pain is the way our body tells us something is wrong.

While antibiotics and pain killers can take the pain away temporarily you should always see your dentist to have the underlying problem treated. If you don’t it will just end up coming back, sometimes even worse than before.

Lost Fillings or Crowns – Like everything in life, fillings and other dental work have a “shelf life” and will begin to break down over time. This can happen because decay has gotten under the existing dental work or because the seal with the tooth has started to break down. Either way it is best to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

If there is no decay under the filling or crown, the sensitivity is caused by having the second layer of your tooth (the Dentin) exposed. Many times this sensitivity can be lessend by filling the space with something. A piece of cotton or sugarless gum can help. You can even get a temp filling material at most pharmacies. If you have lost your crown you can use some tooth paste or other temporary cement to put it back on until you can get in to see your dentist.

In cases where you may need a new crown, we offer one visit crowns custom fabricated right in our office. In most cases this means we can take care of you in just one visit.

Teeth or Gum Injuries – These injuries should not be overlooked. Soft tissue injuries can damage blood vessels or nerves and could lead to infections or other health issues. If there is any bleeding you can rinse your mouth with warm water and apply pressure to bleeding area with a piece of cotton or a towel to stop bleeding.

Any swelling can be helped by placing a cold pack over the swollen area. If a tooth has chipped or broken this can also cause intense dental pain. Not only is the second layer of tooth exposed and sensitive but the tissue that attaches your tooth to the bone can become brusied and swollen and can be intensley painful for several weeks.

Treatment options will vary depending on the severity of the damage ranging anywhere from simply smoothing the rough areas to needing a root canal and a crown.

If a tooth has become completely dislodged. You should rinse the tooth to remove any debris and than place it back into the socket as quickly as possible. If this isnt possible store the tooth in milk or other isotonic solution (not water). Even a fully dislodged tooth can possibly be saved provided you get to your dentist within an hour.

Abscess – An abscess is an infection. It typically results when the nerve in the tooth has died and the infection is beginning to spread to the tissues and bone surrounding the root of the tooth. It can present as extremely painful with swelling but sometimes go unnoticed. If left untreated, it can affect other parts of the body and cause severe and even more serious ailments.

Dental emergency services offer the care needed to protect your beautiful smile when you need it most.
